Traeger not igniting! It’s a common grill issue. The good news is, troubleshooting and fixing a Traeger that won’t ignite is not that big a deal! The most common reason a Traeger won’t ignite is defective hot rod, faulty induction fan, and damaged auger motor.
Read on to learn exactly WHY your Traeger pellet grill is not igniting and HOW to quickly troubleshoot to solve the problem.
Step 1: Check Your Power Source and Cables
- Make sure that the power cord is firmly plugged into the outlet of the power source. If it is a GFCI outlet, it may have caused the tip due to which Traeger is not turning on. Rest the GFCI outlet by pressing the center button. Also, before plugging in your Traeger grill, test the outlet with other appliances. If the outlet is sourcing power, but Traeger is not turning on, you should look for other causes of it.
- Make sure that the Traeger power cord itself has no rips or tears and that it is properly and securely connected into the Traeger grill you are trying to ignite.
Step 2: Remove the Traeger Control Panel and Check the Fuse
- On the back of the controller, there is a fuse that prevents the control board from getting too much power. Make sure to turn the power switch to OFF and UNPLUG the power cord before initiating this step!
- Unscrew the control board. Remove the fuse and inspect it to see whether it looks black and burnt out and needs to be replaced with a new fuse.
Step 3: Check the Colored Wire Connections
- Now, if the power source is working and the fuse is not blown, then next check the control board with other accessory wires and connections.
- First, you need to check for broken wires or scorch marks on them, which will indicate that they are damaged. Also, there should not be a loose connection for each wire on the control board.
If each wire and its connection with the control board is fine, the next step is to unplug each wire from the controller. - Connect the black wire, then power on the Traeger and set it to the smoke setting. If the fuse blows after you set the Traeger to smoke mode, then there is something wrong with the controller.
- If the control board is working, you need to plug all wires one by one and check which electric component is faulty. The faulty component will blow the fuse.
Step 4: Replacing Faulty Parts of Traeger Grill
- Orange is the Induction Motor. If the induction fan is defective, you will only have to remove the bottom panel to access it, remove it, and replace with a new fan.
- Red is the Auger Motor. Check that the auger motor is working. If the auger motor is no longer working, open and empty the hopper and remove the retaining clip. Pull the motor out of the hopper and replace it with a new one.
If the auger motor may be fine, the auger may also cause your fuse control panel to fail; if the auger itself is clogged or stuck, then you just need to clean the auger. - Purple is the Hot Rod Igniter, If your Traeger pellet grill hot rod won't ignite, you may need a new Igniter Kit. Also check the Fire Burn Pot for rust or corrosion, if the firepot is also in poor condition, both are often replaced simultaneously.
Step 5: Replacement of the RTD Temperature Probe
Check the connection of the RTD probe, if it is damaged or loosely connected, it displays the error code "ER2" and "ERR" on the control panel and does not let Traeger grill turn on.
Conclusion
As you can see, fixing a Traeger grill that won’t ignite does not have to be overly complicated, you just need to know which accessory is the problem to solve, it is also recommended to clean the fire Pot after using the grill, the fire pot is too dirty is also the cause of the Traeger does not ignite.
