You enjoy the efficient heat of your pellet stove during the cold months. But because pellet stoves are used frequently during the heating season, they require regular and proper maintenance to keep them operating efficiently.

How to Clean and Maintain Your Pellet Stove at Home

    WHY CLEAN YOUR PELLET STOVE

    • You enjoy the efficient heat of your pellet stove during the cold months. But because pellet stoves are used frequently during the heating season, they require regular and proper maintenance to keep them operating efficiently.
    • If ash and pellets accumulate in your stove, the buildup can become dangerous over time and can even cause a fire, so it must be cleaned.
    • Some proper cleaning and maintenance will save you time and money in the long run.

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR PELLET STOVE

    • Cleaning chimney vent pipes, remove any caps or screens covering the vent hole and swirl the pipe brush from the opening of the vent down in and back up. When you feel it is clean enough, reinstall all the caps covering the vent holes.
    • Remove the ash that's in the burn pot. Use the brush to clear out both the ash and some of the creosote deposits. Scrape the ash off the sides and use an ash vacuum to remove loose ash.
    • Remove the deposits in the exchanger tube, push and pull on the lever several times to make sure the buildup falls off. If the deposits won’t remove, use a wire brush to remove it.
    • Remove the ash tray and empty the contents into the trash.
    • Vacuum the firebox again to remove any remaining ash.
    • Doing Basic Repairs. Lubricate motors and fans, check gasket seals. Remove any fly ash in the stove pipe with the stove pipe.
    • Take a specialized glass cleaner for pellet stoves and wipe it over the glass with a soft cloth.

    TIPS & PRECAUTION

    • Before cleaning, make sure the pellet stove is turned off. Wait until the internal parts of the pellet stove become cold before cleaning.
    • Purchase the Right High-quality Pellets. High quality wood pellets have so much less ash that it can save you many, many hours of cleaning each season.
    • The vacuum cleaner used for pellet stove cleaning should either be designed for the job, or should be a workshop vacuum fitted with a drywall filter.
    • Wear a mask and gloves while cleaning to keep you away from flying ash and keep your hands clean and safe.
