Universal Pit Boss Error Codes & Fixes

Below you will find the meaning, reason, and solution to all Pit Boss error codes. Just give it a quick read and let the simple solution fix your issue.

    1. Pit Boss Pellet Grill Error Codes Relating to the Temperature Probe

The Er1 error code, Err error code, and ErL error code are all indicators that points to an issue with the temperature probe.
When this error code comes up, your Pit Boss won’t heat up. It shows that the electric pellet grill’s temperature sensor is malfunctioning. In fact, many times, a dirty temperature probe is the source of the problem.

Here's how to tackle this problem effectively:

    • Turn off the smoker and let it cool down.
    • Unplug the smoker from the power outlet.
    • Empty the hopper. Remove the pellets from the auger and the burner as well
    • Check underneath the smoker for loose wires, especially the temperature probe wires.
    • Check the RTD temperature probe for damage or excessive gunk. If the temperature probe is covered in grease and ash, your Pit Boss will not be able to read the temperature, and an error will be displayed on the control board.
(Clean the temperature probe with a mixture of water and vinegar. Rinse the temperature probe as thoroughly as possible with a solution of one part water to one part vinegar.)
    • If the Temperature Probe has gone bad, get a new one and install it through the Molex connector

    2. Pit Boss Error Code Er2

The Pit Boss error code Er2 means that the ignition failed to boost the temperature above 160°C within half an hour.

Here's how to tackle this problem effectively:

    • Check the hopper has pellets and the auger is primed.
    • As soon as you see a few pellets drop into the burn pot, let go of the Prime button.
    • If the auger isn’t moving then there is either an auger blockage which you’ll need to address or the auger motor has failed.
    • After cleaning out the auger, check to see if it turns via the Prime button before loading pellets back into the hopper.
    • Checking the ignition rod, you can check if the hot rod igniter is working by placing your hand above the burn pot and setting the dial to Smoke.
    • If you cannot feel the heat after a minute, you need replace the Hot Rod.

    3.  Pit Boss Error Code ErH

The error code ErH indicates that the Pit Boss unit is overheating. That the internal temperature inside the cooking chamber has exceeded the safe operating temperature. Problems with the grill temperature probe, the presence of excess fuel, or a grease fire can all trigger that error code.

Here's how to tackle this problem effectively:

    • Clearing ashes and wood chips from the firepot. Remove the grill grates, grease tray, and heat baffle from the grill.
    • Thoroughly sweep off the excess wood dust with a vacuum. Gently lower the ash vacuum head into the fire pot, taking care not to make touch any machinery to avoid accidentally hurting anything.
    • Clean the grates and check the drip pan. Clean the interior of the unit with salt and baking soda.
    • Check that the temperature probe is not faulty, ensure temperature sensor wires are securely connected and use a wire ball to clean the temperature probe.
    • Clean up your firepot, hopper, and auger. Buy good quality pellets that are consistent in shape and texture that don’t have a lot of loose sawdust.

    4.  Pit Boss Error Code ErP

You should not panic at all if you’re grill flashes an ErP code. After this code just indicates that your Pit Boss wasn’t shut off properly.
Resolving this error code is as simple as, turn the temperature dial to the OFF position. Wait for two minutes, then set the dial to the temperature you need to cook.

    5.  Pit Boss Error Code noP

The noP error code indicates that the meat probe of your Pit Boss smoker is not connected properly or is damaged.

Here's how to tackle this problem effectively:

    • Check and inspect for any physical damage. Look for any rips or tears and knots.
    • Insert the probe into the socket, You will know if you successfully inserted it into the plug when you hear a snap.
    • If the code still doesn’t go away, you will need to Replace the Meat Probe.

As any rips or tears to the thermometer probe cables will stop a temperature from being achieved. Probes not in use should be rolled up with large loose coils. Remember to clean the meat probe after use, clean it with the rough side of a damp sponge.

Hello, my Pit Boss is showing err. I turn it on, it starts going the after 5 seconds or so it will start flashing err. I’ve tried cleaning the thermostat then ended up buying a new thermostat and replaced it. STILL reads err. This all started when I used a different type of pellet (longer) after 2-3 cooks!

I’m about over this smoker. I’ve bought two in the last week the 1st one was DOA. Bought another one from a different place. Both had damaged parts, but the second one worked except for the pellet change out door was not working properly. So today I took it apart and found the part was bent not allowing it to function as it should. I repaired that now I went to fire it up to smoke 45.00 worth of beef ribes. But, I can’t I have an error erp. It will not go away and work as it should. I’m not a happy camper at this time. Please help and make this right.

My smoker keeps faulting on ErP code, if it cools down completely it will sometimes start up and then with the temp set at 375 it will light and the temp will get to maybe 165 and it goes into ErP code again. This is all I can get the smoker to do. I just purchased it this spring so you can understand my frustration.
