Common Error Codes of Traeger Grill and Their Solutions

    Aug 20,2022 | YAOAWE

Traeger grills are now hot cake in the markets. Still, even the best models can run into trouble from time to time. There is nothing quite as frustrating as your expensive grill conking out in the middle of a cook.
Thankfully, many of these things are easily fixed, so you can get back to grilling in no time. In our Traeger Grill troubleshooting guide, we’ll help you root out and solve any potential issues, so you can get back to smoking!

This guide will cover the following most common error codes on Traeger pellet grills and provide solutions:

    LEr – Low Temperature Error
    HEr – High Temperature Error
    ERR
    ER1
    ER2

Now let’s dive into each of these error codes and fix the issue so you can get back to smoking!

    LEr Code on Traeger

LEr stands for Low Error Reading. It is an error message specific to non-WiFIRE grills. Getting this message means that your grill dropped below 125°F for more than 10 minutes, causing your grill to shut off.

    Fixing LEr Code

    1. Turn the Traeger off and unplug it.
    2. If it’s cold outside, try moving your grill somewhere that’s sheltered from the wind, or that’s in full sunshine to try and compensate.
    3. Remove the grill grates, drip tray, and heat baffle and check the firepot.
Clean the firepot, vacuum out the ash in the firepot. And restart your grill.
Ensure a proper startup procedure to ignite wood pellets in Traeger. For the startup of Traeger, you’ve to follow the respective grill instructions.
    4. Check the RTD probe for Damage.
Check and make sure that this probe is not damaged in any way. If it is bent, chipped or broken, you’ll need to replace it.
If the RTD sensor is bent or touching another part of the grill, gently bend the RTD probe away from the wall or object it touches.
Check if the RTD probe is clean, you can use steel wool to clean the RTD temperature sensor.
    5. Check if the grill is reading temperature correctly.
Turn on the grill and take note of what temperature shows up on the controller.
Compare this to the outside temperature. A working RTD temperature sensor should read within 20°F/10°C of the ambient air temperature.
Note that if the grill is in direct sunlight, it will read much hotter than the outside temp.
    6. Check your Chimney.
If your grill has a chimney, make sure that the cap is at the right height: about a thumb's space between the chimney and the chimney cap.
Check the chimney to ensure it isn’t blocked with soot and buildup. Clean the chimney if necessary.
    7. Check the Induction Fan on your grill.
You should be able to hear this fan when starting your grill.
If there is no sound, or if it sounds weak or is, making squeaking noises, try to manually spin the fan to break up any grime.
If the fan still makes no sound and does not work, please replace Induction Fan.
    8. Adjust your P-Settings (Pause setting)
The P-Setting (Pause setting) helps monitor the grill's temperature when experiencing extreme cold or hot temperatures. You can change P-setting from P-4 to P-3 or P-2 in cold weather so that wood pellets can be fed into the auger more frequently.

    HEr Code on Traeger

The grill's temperature exceeds 550°F/287°C, usually due to a grill fire/flare up. When your grill reaches over 550°F, the grill will automatically shut off, and the controller will display "HEr."
Common causes for the HEr error code are:

    1. Too much ash or grease in the grill
    2. Defective temperature probe
    3. Faulty temp controller
    4. Bad pellets and too much dust in them

Typically, an HEr error will resolve on its own when you restart your grill.

Even if the error goes away upon restart, we recommend that you do some checks to make sure your grill continues to work at its best.

    • Check the fire pot for dust, clear any pellets from the fire pot. Make sure your grill is clean.
    • Make sure the firepot, heat baffle, drip tray, and grill grates are all in place and free of damage.
    • Ensure the grill is reading the temperature accurately by checking the RTD probe.
    • Turn the Traeger back on and verify that the grill start normally

As long as the Traeger can start normally and hold a regular temperature such as 225°F then the grill is ready for cooking.

Err & Er1 Code on Traeger

Causes for the Err/Er1 error code is a bad connection or a complete disconnect between the RTD probe and the control panel.

    Fixing Err/Er1 Code:

    • Turn off and unplug your grill.
    • Remove the two Phillips-head screws holding the controller in place.
    • On the back of the controller, loosen the flathead brackets on the green box that hold the RTD wires in place.
    • Disconnect the RTD wire from the green housing box, then re-insert the RTD wire and re-tighten the flush bracket.

    • Reinstall the control board and screw in the two Phillips head screws.

    • Plug in the grill and turn it on. Check whether the ERR issue has been resolved.

If the Err or Er1 codes still appear on the controller, you need to Replace the Temperature Probe.

Err & Er1 Code on Traeger

Causes for the Er2 error code is a faulty RTD probe or control panel.

    Fixing ER2 Code:

    1. Inspect the inside of the grill to ensure that there are no breaks or tears in the wires leading to the RTD probe.
    2. Unplug the grill, unscrew the controller and check the wires on the back of the controller.
    3. Make sure the wires of the RTD probe are properly connected and tightened.
    4. After checking the wires, screw the controller back to its original position.
    5. Open the grill and if the ER2 code still appears, then the RTD sensor needs to be replaced.
    6. If the Traeger still displays the ER2 error message after the RTD sensor has been replaced, then the Controller needs to be repaired or replaced.

    Final Thoughts

Error codes are simply a way for the Traeger to notify you of an issue that’s occurred.
If you see an error code pop up on your digital display. Now you don’t need to panic since you can read the code and follow the steps in the guide to get you back to smoking!

Er1 error. Did what treager suggested… still error. Since it deals with temp sensor and was cold outside, I simply used a lighter on the probe inside the smoke box and heated it up a little. Turned on again and worked fine.
